Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful

On November 2, 2012, in Uncategorized, by Admin

On Saturday night, I had the great privilege of being the guest of honor at the 237th anniversary Marine Ball.  Each year around the world, Marines gather to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps.  U.S. Embassy personnel always enjoy the opportunity to dress up and get together.  It is a time for remembrance, for ceremony, and most of all, for celebration.

At the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, we honor those brave men and all the men and women of the Marine Corps who, since November 10, 1775, have served their country with uncommon valor and distinction.  As we do each year, we renew our commitment to these brave warriors.  It was an honor for me to share in the special anniversary celebration.  All U.S. Embassy employees expressed our great respect and heartfelt appreciation for the mission of the U.S. Marine Corps and particularly the key role that they play in defending U.S. diplomatic missions around the world.

As we joined together with our friends and guests, we were all treated to a display of the U.S. Marine’s ceremony and tradition.  We had speeches, a cake cutting ceremony, and a very special presentation of the colors, or flags.  I am glad our Marines were able to celebrate the birthday of their Corps even here in Cambodia, and I am glad I was able to be a part of it.  Semper Fidelis Marines, and Happy Birthday!

Ambassador, glad to hear you enjoyed our Ball. It’s also nice to see the appreciation that you have for your Marines. Occasionally there are people in the State Dept. that don’t. Take care of them for they will take care of you if/when the need arises.

“Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping their Commandant almost as if he was a god, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They’ll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest SOB’s I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man’s normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and , generally speaking, of the United States Marines I’ve come in contact with, are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet.”
