Project Citizen students honored
I had a great time attending the Project Citizen Student Showcase in New Delhi at the India Islamic Cultural Center. I met with 350 very bright students, and reviewed the student projects addressing some of the most important challenges facing India today. I saw excellent exhibits with creative solutions to water conservation, sanitation, child labor, mental health, and human rights for minorities. These “future leaders of India” demonstrated a core value of a well-functioning democracy – the need for citizens to participate and get involved in their communities. From Gandhiji to Martin Luther King, from Prime Minister Nehru to President Kennedy, community service is one of the many shared values between our two countries that has strengthened our democracies and our partnership. We have a lot to learn from all regions of India; I would like to hear from you… Send me your ideas on how democracies like India and the United States can partner together to solve some of the challenges of the 21st century.
