In addition to having interpreters available in multiple languages for visa applicants who require assistance, several of the consular officers at Embassy Manila are trained in Tagalog. One of these officers, Kevin, has written the following blog post on why we need NBI clearances in AKAs. Kevin was previously featured in the US Embassy Manila’s “Kwentuhan Tayo, Pinoy Style!” YouTube series.

It is always best that from the start one has to know his/her real name and use it as well. Even if not for VISA application, use your real name. Using too many names or aliases will not only confuse people but will ultimately confuse the person as well. Our name is our stamp. Many new parents named their children with three to four names and it is going to cause a problem in the long run because long names are hard to remember or difficult to write and often times in filing up a form, 32 to 35 characters only are allowed and some names need more than that! Simple names are still the best. Anyway, it is what the person with that name has become that matters the most.
Just like to ask, I wS annuled and im using my maiden name now. My present passport, my birth certificate and the name appeared on my present nbi clearance are all the same. I have read in one blog that I do need to secure an NBI showing my surname on my last marriage. I am having hard time to se ure it, I went to NBI twice and they just gave me a clearance showing my present name as single eventhough I told them that my previous surname must appear. They told me that no need. What xhall I do? Pls help me, just dont want to be denied during my intderview just because of his. Thanks so much

Immigrant visa applicants aged 16 years and older must have a valid Record Clearance for Travel Abroad Purposes from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). Clearances should be in the applicant’s current name, birth certificate name, maiden name and any aliases or nicknames used, including different spellings you have used of those names. These other names/spellings can be listed as “AKAs” on your clearance. For immigration purposes, an NBI clearance is valid for one (1) year from the date it was issued. For more information in applying for NBI clearances, you may visit the NBI web site at http://www.nbi.gov.ph.
hello. question. is this applicable for non-immigrannt visa or immigrant visa? thank you
NBI clearances are required for immigrant visa applications, but not for nonimmigrant visa applications.
Maggie…If you are a K-1 visa applicant, you will be required to submit your NBI clearance during your interview at the Embassy. The K-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa which is processed in the Immigrant Visa Unit at the U.S. Embassy Manila.
may i ask if the NBI clearance as well as other local police clearances forwarded during the submission of civil documents be updated during the interview for immigrant visa applicants? The clearances would have expired before the priority date becomes current. Thank you.
Documents (medical exam, police clearances, visa photos, whichever is applicable) must be valid during the visa application process. Immigrant visa applicants are required to update any expired documents.
I have submitted our application forms and corresponding civil documents last year. Due to retrogression of visas, validity of my clearances, photos and civil docs would have expired before my priority date becomes current. I recently got a notice from NVC that they are in the file awaiting notification from the embassy. Do I need to prepare new sets of documents and resubmit to NVC or to be handcarried during the interview? Tks

We understand that you have submitted basic documentary requirements at the State Department’s National Visa Center (NVC).
When NVC forward an applicant’s case file to Embassy Manila, it would include all original documents submitted in support of the visa application, which will be reviewed at the time of the visa interview. The consular officer determines if any additional or updated documents are needed as the application is processed.
I was interviewed Sept 4,2012 and was given a 221g. Nbi with AKA. Already sent the requested document. May i ask what phone number shoul i call to follow up visa. And i forgot to give my shipping form. The guy on the last window told me that its ok for me to go home without telling me to drop my shipping form. Will this cause a problem? Thank you in advance.

I have the same case. Applied for an NBI last Sept 28, 2012 but was told to come back on Oct 11. How come you got your result so early? Did you get your visa already? I’m worried because we want our children to catch up on 2nd semester enrollment in US. Thanks so much!

All visa applicants (immigrant and fiancé visas) are required to submit a valid NBI Clearance upon reaching the age of 16. NBI clearance submitted should be in the applicant’s current name, birth certificate name, maiden name, married name and any aliases or nicknames ever used, including different spellings of all names.
We hope this information is helpful to you

hi. good day. i have two concerns you might be able to help:
1. Marriage cert name and NVC letters indicate Maria but birth cert name is Ma. The correct name should actually be Ma. which is also currently being used for other documents such as passports and IDs. Is an affidavit needed?
2. Do we need three NBI clearances for the following: (a) Marriage cert Maria, (b) birth cert and maiden name Ma., and (c) current married name (in passport and IDs) Ma.
thanks so much.

NBI clearances should be in your current name, birth certificate name, maiden name, married name, and any aliases or nicknames you ever used, including different spellings of all your names. If you wish to submit an NBI clearance without your alias at the time of your visa interview you may do so. At that time you will be informed regarding any additional documents you may need to submit.
