Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations. U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. This Travel Alert expires August 1, 2011.

U.S. Embassy operations in affected areas will continue to the extent possible under the constraints of any evolving security situation. U.S. government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. Embassies and Consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Media coverage of local events may cause family and friends to become concerned for their loved ones traveling and residing abroad. We urge U.S. citizens to keep in regular contact with family and friends. U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad are encouraged to enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), to receive the latest travel updates and information and to obtain updated information on travel and security issues. Large-scale protests and wide-spread vandalism have traditionally occurred on April 30 and May 1 in certain areas of Berlin, Hamburg, and other German cities. These protests are often accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and police, as well as property damage, including the burning of cars and minor looting. While incidents in Berlin have largely been confined to the Kreuzberg neighborhood, acts of violence have spread in the past few years to other neighborhoods. Berlin police expect an increase in violence this year due to recent events, such as the Liebig 14, where squatters were forcibly evicted from residences in Friedrichshain in January, sparking days of violent clashes with Berlin police.

The U.S. Government is urging its employees and family members to avoid the following neighborhoods in Berlin from the night of April 30 and through Monday morning May 2:

In other words, RSS is a mechanism in which websites post information online in a format that can be processed by external applications like web browsers, RSS readers, or email programs. That way, information can be pushed out to readers instead of making the audience come and get the info themselves.

It’s a gripping thriller with a suspenseful plot, but we have one small gripe. We would be remiss if we didn’t correct a factual error in this movie about the services we provide for our citizens overseas.

During one particular scene, Dr. Harris (played by Liam Neesom) finds himself in a distressing situation and demands to speak to his Embassy. The head of security at his Berlin hotel informs him that this is not possible, as the Embassy is closed for Thanksgiving.

Your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you reside. But don’t fret! Just because you have to file a tax return doesn’t necessarily mean you owe taxes (there is a bilateral tax treaty between the U.S. and Germany).

If you reside overseas, or are in the military on duty outside the U.S., you are allowed an automatic 2-month extension to file your return until June 15. However, any tax due must be paid by the original return due date (April 15) to avoid interest charges.

These procedures are very similar to those in an airport. Our guards make every effort to screen visitors as quickly and politely as possible. You can help make the process easier and faster by not bringing any prohibited items with you. These include:

Luggage, suitcases, or backpacks

Electrical, electronic, or battery-operated items - including CELL PHONES, MP3 PLAYERS, computers, video games, or electric toys

Firearms and edged weapons, including toy weapons

Explosives

Chemical agents, liquids, and gasses

Any other items that are primarily weapons by design and/or use

As you will be denied entry to the Consular section if you arrive with any of these items, we recommend that you leave them at home, with a friend, or locked in your car.

To read about our security procedures in more detail, please read our security procedures handout.

This travel document offers a convenient way for American citizens to re-enter the United States through land and sea ports of entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. But beware, the card is not valid for air travel of any kind or for travel within Europe and IS NOT a globally recognized travel document!

When outside the United States, the passport card can be used as valid citizenship identification. And because it’s about the size of a credit card, it fits perfectly inside a wallet for easy carrying.

Adults who currently have valid U.S. passports may apply for the passport card. Visit our website to learn how to apply.

Many countries require two to three available visa pages. Others require that your passport not expire for at least six months from your planned entry. Still others require American citizens to apply for a visa before reaching their border. Plus, many countries limit the length of time Americans are allowed to stay in a country as a tourist to a couple of weeks or months. How can you know what the requirements or regulations are?
Male U.S. Citizens between the ages of 18 and 26 are required to register with the Selective Service no matter where they currently reside. Not registering is a felony!

Registering with Selective Service does not mean you are joining the military nor does it mean that you are signing up for the all-voluntary armed services. The fact that a man is required to register does not mean that he will be drafted. No one has been drafted since 1973. One of the fun things about living outside of the U.S. is adapting our holidays in each country we’re in. I know many of us here in Frankfurt have already visited the Kleinmarkthalle to pick up fresh cranberries and vegetables, and some of us are skipping the big turkey and getting Turkish food instead.

How are you celebrating Thanksgiving this year in Germany? Do you have any tips on finding the needed ingredients locally or fun activities for after the feast?

We are excited about this project and hope that you will be as well. With the launch of For the People, we hope to start a dialogue with U.S. citizens visiting or living in Germany and to provide you with up-to-date news and information.

We wouldn't be here without you - the State Department's main purpose overseas is to provide services for U.S. citizens, and Germany has one of the largest American expatriate communities in the world. Approximately 180,000 U.S. citizens live in Germany, and last year we provided services, such as passport renewals and emergency assistance, to over 40,000 citizens. With that many customers, we're constantly trying to improve our services and make sure that we communicate with U.S. citizens effectively. We'll use this blog to make sure that you know right away about any changes in our services or any important information for U.S. citizens living or visiting overseas, so make sure to check back frequently, subscribe to our RSS feed, or bookmark this page so you can always find us quickly.

Finally, we are new at this and would love to get feedback on how we're doing. Feel free to comment on any posts and email us with suggestions for new posts or series of posts. We hope to hear from you often.

You can find the full text of this alert here:http://go.usa.gov/ari.

Do you know the different between a Travel Alert and a Travel Warning? We issue Travel Alerts, like this one, for short-term events we think you should know about when planning to travel to a country. When we want you to consider very carefully whether you should travel to a country at all, we issue a Travel Warning.

At this time, the most important thing for you to do is remain aware of the security situation while traveling or living within Europe. One great way for you to do this is to register with the State Department. That way, you’ll receive an email any time we have additional information about possible concerns or threats. To register today, click here:http://go.usa.gov/ar3.

Many thanks to all of the community groups who came to share information with the American Citizen community. It was a real pleasure to see the vibrant American Citizen community from Frankfurt and the surrounding area. The energy and diversity of the American community was readily apparent. Over 250 American Citizens and their families joined Consulate staff to learn about area churches, community groups, schools, and recreational possibilities. Consulate staff also answered questions about immigration procedures, passports, birth registrations, federal benefits, and security while living overseas. Lots of snacks were available as well – everything from chocolate chip cookies to delicious Bagel Brothers sandwiches.
