Well, it would be great if we Americans were allowed to drive here in Germany without paying hundred of Euros??? I am from California and have to pay 300 Euros to be able to drive here.

How come Germans legally staying in the USA can get a Driver License if they pay the application fee? In California only 31$

ALL Canadian provinces and territories have full license reciprocity with Germany, how come we do not not have the same benefit?

This is very helpful to know. I am going through the process of getting married in Germany, and along with having an Affidavit (certification of single status), I need to have my birth certifcate translated into German. Any good recomendations on where I could have this done...in Duesseldorf?

Hey, thank you very much for this post. We live in Portland, Oregon and we have a real problem with computer waste here. Fortunately there is a program in effect here for recycling computers. There are a bunch of smaller computer repair companies here that work as drop-off locations for used computer parts and they help people to "wipe" their info off of hard drives, then send the computers to computer recycling centers that try to refurbish whatever they can. Anyway, thanks again for your post.

Great idea, Michael! We see a lot of people whose passports are either worn down or lost because they carry them around everywhere, so agree that this can be a really helpful little card!

Super,
I just figured out about the passport card and will tell my wife about it.
She lives in Germany since a number of years, and we always lock up her passport at home in a safe, because carrying it all the time around in a purse is a nuisance. If it ever gets stolen - there would be a lot of trouble.
So beeing able to get now a small Passport Card that fits like a creditcard into the wallet is a great idea to always have some official identity card along - and still keep the passport safe at home.
Michael.

If anyone wants to know about the situation in Egypt, watch www.democracynow.org
They have the best reporting and clearly demonstrate with their live reports from Cairo the unbelieveable courage of the peaceful demonstrators in Tahrir Square.
Americans must support the Egyptian people NOW. Murbarak must go NOW. His choice of men to run the government is a farce. democracy will not come to Egypt with those people.
America has supported a dictatorship for three decades. Now it is time to turn a leaf.

Hi Jutta,
Even if you don't earn much money, the IRS still requires that you file U.S. taxes (although it's highly unlikely you'll owe any taxes). You'll need to file 6 years of back tax returns. If you owe any taxes, then you'll need to file 10 years of back tax returns. We have an IRS office at the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt, and you can call them to get additional information. You can find their contact information and a list of tax advisors here in Germany on our website here: http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/irs/. Thank you for your comment!

Hi Catherine,
To replace the German birth certificate, you'll need to contact the German authorities that issued it in Garmisch. You can check out this page on our website to find out how to replace the Report of Birth Abroad: http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/reportofbirthabroad-replacement/. You basically need to send some information and a US$30 fee to the State Department in Washington. Please let us know if we can help you with anything else.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your question, which is a common one for U.S. citizens living in Germany. Our IRS colleagues say that you need to file 6 years of back tax returns. If you owe any taxes, you will need to file 10 years of back tax returns. If you are a military ID holder (active or retired military), you can visit the tax assistance office at your closest military base for help with this. Otherwise, you can call the IRS office at U.S. Consulate Frankfurt for further assistance. You can find contact information for this office and links to the correct forms on our website here: http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/irs/. Good luck!

Hi Hector,
There are 3 ways to stay up-to-date about these kinds of events: First, we always advertise the ACS days in Hamburg on Consulate Hamburg's website: http://hamburg.usconsulate.gov. We will also post an article here on the blog, so if you subscribe to our updates, you'll receive a notification about it. Finally, you can sign up for our Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive regular updates on issues that matter to U.S. citizens abroad here: https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/. We hope to see you next time!

Hi James! Sounds like a great way to commemorate the day. There's nothing like keeping in touch with friends and family (and clearing out your inbox too!).

Since my family lives across the big pond I don't really celebrate Thanksgiving, but it does give me the time to sleep in, go shopping and write all the emails that have been waiting on me to write.

Thanksgiving is for me a time to stay in contact with friends.

Hi Bdrouven,
As ex-military, when military personnel are deployed, their Units are given an address for their location through an APO AE address. Here is an example of an APO AE Address:

SGT. John Doe
123rd Imaginary Battalion
APO AE 09534

You may have to get the assigned address from your nephew before you are able to send him mail, or maybe your nephews parents already have the address which would make things even easier for you.
Once you have the address just send your package via normal German mail to your nephew. Normally when sending mail to an APO address, the German post office will forward it to a military base where it gets sent to the addressee; I don’t want to make assumptions but the APO address of your Nephew in Afghanistan may be the base address the German post is asking from you. Doing it this way has worked for both me and my wife.

I suggest you contact the American Legion, Department of France (which also covers Germany) to see if they can provide you with a definitive answer. The American Legion is an organization tasked with supporting active duty military, family members, retirees and veterans and I’m sure they would want to see a service member receive his/her treats. This link contains the email addresses of various American Legion Posts near you. Good luck!

I didn't want to stump anyone! I just want to send some treats to my nephew and his comrads and some bonbons for them to share with the local kids. So far I have contacted the Deutsche Post several times by mail and service hotline. At first they insisted that the packages be sent by international DHL. After I insisted that there is a possibility to mail them by national service to a military base in Germany to have them forwarded, they confirmed that this possibility exists but insist that I provide an address for such base. So far I have not been able to find any addresses for the Army Post Offices in Germany. I even wrote a mail to the Military Postal Service Agency, but received no reply. I am also not sure how to address the package. Do I write my Nephew's address and c/o the Army Post Office in Germany? Can your military expert help me find this information? Thanks in advance for your help!

You almost stumped us on this one! Luckily, one of our military experts here knows what to do. You should be able to mail packages addressed to an APO address at any Deutsche Post office. They are sent like normal mail in Germany, and they should charge you normal domestic postage. They will then send the package to a nearby military base, where it will be sorted and sent on to Afghanistan. You can contact the Deutsche Post for more information at 01802-33-33 or their website: http://www.deutschepost.de/dpag?lang=de_EN.

am an American citizen living in Hamburg,Germany. I would like to send a package to my nephew's APO Address in Afghanistan. To what address in Germany should I mail the package such that it will be forwarded on through the APO system? I was told at the German postal office that there is an address in Frankfurt to which I can send the package. What details must I considering when labeling the package? I would greatly appreciate any information which would be helpful in assuring that the package arrives quickly.

Thank you for your comment, Heather. We’re very sorry that you’ve had some difficulties with this issue. Unfortunately, we are unable to affect German labor and education laws. The German Embassy in the U.S. has a website with a lot of useful information on these subjects, which you can find here: http://www.germany.info. If you would like to speak with someone in the American Citizen Services section of our Embassy in Berlin or the Consulate nearest you, we would be happy to discuss this issue with you and see if we can point you to some helpful resources.

Dear Minister-Counselor Stewart,

Thank you for offering this service.

Acknowledging that you would likely need disclaimers stating that the U.S. Government in no way endorses any of the comments or establishments listed, would it be possible to have discussion threads respecting doctors, dentists, schools, etc.? It is a theme we return to constantly in our household. In the past, your website has supported lists, but I think it would be beneficial to be able to read through the American ex-pat community's comments and reviews.

Thanks!

Elizabeth

P.S.
I'm not sure I successfully subscribed to "We the People". I clicked on the link and was directed to a page with articles but no place for me to input my data. Apologies if I just overlooked it.

Great reminder not to wait "even a minute" to report stolen credit/EC cards (especially useful that you listed the phone numbers, too). Just watched a report last night on German TV about a woman whose purse was stolen out of her car as she loaded groceries into the trunk. She reported the loss as soon as she got home but even that was too late.

As I really am located quite south where relatively little/no Americans are I am really looking forward to maintaining some connections with our embassy. As the previous reader also indicated, it would be quite nice to have an attachment to Facebook so that we could easily see what is new or updated rapidly. Thanks!

It is a nice step in the right direction. You might start by explaining that, if you got your high school degree early in the USA, it will under NO circumstances be considered an Abitur here - even if you have successfully completed all of the required courses. This is because the Germans cannot imagine how it is possible to complete an Abitur in less than 12 years - according to the Trier ADD - so they automatically consider your 11 1/2 years (as in my case) as a Realschulabschluss. Anything to cheat foreigners out of that which they have actually earned, because it cannot be worth anything if it was not done here in Germany.

Also, the Consul will not attempt to aid you in any way with such issues. This means you can study for 8 years at university in the USA and still receive only a Fachabitur here. You have no recourse, because no one listens and no one cares.

You are entitled to nothing and no services, because you are not Turkish and you are not a member of the EU. You are a minority foreigner.

Thanks for the positive feedback! While we don't currently have a Facebook account just for U.S. Citizen Services, we may be implementing something similar in the future, so stay tuned. Our Embassy in Berlin and each of the Consulates do, however, have Facebook and Twitter accounts; you can find links to these pages on our main blog page. It's a great way to stay informed about what we're doing (I've friended them myself). We hope that you will bookmark our blog and check back regularly for our many updates!

This is a really nice thought and a step in the right direction... Just one question: do you by chance have a page setup on Facebook as well? I like the concept of your blog but I don't want to be annoyed with tonnes of emails (via the email subscription) everytime someone comments. I'd rather check out something on FB while I'm there anyway. I don't currently check this site on a steady/regular basis and probably won't in the future... Just a thought of an alternative way to reach a lot more people. I of course understand if you want to manage the data and be able to manipulate it easier to watch general trends of issues relating to Americans abroad via your database... Either way, just a thought. Good luck with your new endeavor! :)

Great question! While this blog will replace the quarterly newsletter, we will continue to send out any travel advisories or important information by email to our subscribers. We hope that you'll check this blog often, however, for additional information or if you have any questions about anything we sent out.

Thank you for nevertheless providing the possibility to subscribe to comments made to this blog via e-mail.

Question: "For the People will replace the quarterly American Citizen Services newsletter"

Will travel advisories also be normally made only at this blog in the future or will they continue to be sent out as e-mail to those who had previously so subscribed?

This is a great outreach tool! I hope it generates some great discussions for you guys.

I have one question; is it possible to have a subscribe feature for the actual blog/new entries itself? Or only for the comments of a particular post?

Thanks!
