The Fourth of July celebrates the United States of America’s birthday and the ratification of the Declaration of Independence on July 4^th, 1776.  American colonists first celebrated the Fourth of July in 1777, commemorating the one year anniversary of the Declaration’s adoption with fireworks and bonfires. The celebration became broadly popular following the War of 1812, and Congress ultimately made the day an official government holiday in 1870. Today, Americans typically celebrate the Fourth of July with parades, firework displays, and family gatherings.
