The deal was worked out between Iran and the “P-5+1” – the U.S., the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany. Considering that the U.S. and Iran started high-level negotiations only a few months ago – the first such talks since Iran seized the U.S. embassy and took American diplomats hostage in 1979 – this is a very significant development. There are four main pathways to gain LPR (legal permanent resident) status in the United States: family sponsorship, a job offer from a US employer, humanitarian reasons, and selection via a green-card lottery. The current immigrant admission system prioritizes family-based immigrants, followed by employer-sponsored immigrants and those who arrive as humanitarian migrants. There is a broad consensus that the large increase in home foreclosures has negatively impacted individual households, local communities, and the economy as a whole. This report provides background on the increase in foreclosure rates in recent years. It also describes recent attempts to preserve homeownership that have been implemented by the federal government, and briefly outlines current proposals for further foreclosure prevention activities. It concludes with a discussion of some of the challenges inherent in designing foreclosure prevention initiatives.
